Population rates within the Red Lake District have remained fairly stable through the 1980s and into the 1990s Changes in mining activities in the area have meant a slight decrease in the area's population in the later 1990s and into 2000.

It is anticipated that renewed vigour at Evolution Mining will provide for modest increases in the area's permanent population base.

Population structure is dominated by the younger age groups. Employment within the district is dominated by primary industries including mining and forestry. As a district centre the area also supports a large number of health services and public service jobs.
